2019 SpinSheet Photography Guidelines

For Our Sailing Photographers

SpinSheet relies on a large stable of amateur and professional photographers for our magazine, photo gallery, and digital platforms. In an effort to streamline our photo storage and in-house photo processing, here are our 2019 Spinsheet photography submittal guidelines. Send photos to [email protected]. You may also send questions about the following:

  1. Whether you submit just one or several photos, it’s important to name the photo or series of photos using your last name or initials. (A simple way to do so is to hit Ctrl A to select all photos, and then right click and go down the dropdown menu to “rename.”)

  2. If you are only submitting three photos, you may send them by email. Please do not send 10 emails with one photo each. If you have that many photos to send, please send them as a batch (see #3).
  3. To send a batch of photos, use WeTranfer.com or Hightail.com. For Hightail, you will need to open an account with an email address and password; not so for WeTransfer. WeTransfer is best for sending enormous or huge numbers of photo files. These are NOT photo storage services—they are for sharing files only. Try them, you’ll like them.
  4. If there are captions associated with your photos, include them in a Word file in the folder you send through the photo sharing service. Please use a detailed description for each photo file. For example, these three would be in the Word document and make it very easy to match caption to photo.

  5. If you are shooting several regattas or events in one day for us, please separate your photos into a folder for each event, even if you think that would be obvious. (It won’t be easy for an intern or newcomer to distinguish a J/22 from a TP 52). If you shoot Saturday and Sunday, it’s okay if these photos go into the same folder, as long as it’s the same event/regatta. As with any photo folder, it’s important to have your name or initials in the photo file.
  6. It’s nice to have a mix of vertical and horizontal shots. Horizontal ones work best for our digital needs; vertical ones work best for cover shots.
  7. We pay $50 for cover shots and are always open to cruising and racing photos for SpinSheet and PropTalk.
