How I invested (not spent) my 100 days on the Water in 2018
Ken Vinson, a three-time SpinSheet Century Club member, who reached his 100-day goal in October, shares a few Century Club "euphemisms." He says, "We all need to rearrange our priorities to achieve 100 days a year on the water, but sometimes it’s more about how you say it. Instead of just going out on the water, try one of these euphemisms the next time you go out."
Workout - before going to work in the morning, trade the gym workout for 3 miles of stand-up paddle boarding on Chesapeake Bay, East Beach, Norfolk (SUP, 11 days)
Spiritual Enlightenment - dawn workouts while watching awesome sunrises over Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (SUP, 19 days)
Aerobic Workout - dawn workouts trying to keep pace with a pod of dolphins (SUP, 14 days)
Continuing education- Provide stand-up paddling instructions for friends & neighbors (SUP, 3 days).
People’s Choice Award - Comedy - nomination for most number of hysterical wipeouts in one week, SUP surfing Duke’s break, Waikiki, Oahu, HI. (SUP, 6 days)
Whale’s Tale - Whale watching trip out of Rudee Inlet, VA Beach; (1 day)
Sales Call - business trip to Seattle, forego the rental car, water taxi ride across Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island, (water taxi rides, 2 days)
Quality Time - Bareboat charter cruising Ionian Islands along west coast of Greece with grown children & their spouses, sailing the bluest sea on Earth. (Lagoon 421 catamaran, Enjoy, 4 islands, 7 nights/8 days)
Mental Exercises - concentrating to keep the tell tails flat even when not racing, catamaran sailing on the lower Bay, (Hobie Wave, 11 days)
Speed Trial - catamaran sailing on the Bay, alongside dolphins (Hobie Wave, 3 days)
Bridge the Generation Gap - introducing catamaran sailing to youth-size PFD-wearing crew, who’d never sailed before (Hobie Wave, 5 days)
Parade Route - 41st annual Norfolk Harborfest Parade of Sail, long weekend for food, fireworks, entertainment, overnight, (Maine Cat 30, Popoki Kai, 3 days)
Out to Lunch - picnic lunch day sailing, lower Chesapeake Bay with friends, family & neighbors, round trips sailed from Little Creek Inlet to Thimble Shoals Light (Maine Cat 30, Popoki Kai, 13 days)
Guys Night Out - 8th annual autumn father-son crusty cruise on the lower Chesapeake Bay, Hampton Roads Harbor, & Fort Monroe. (Popoki Kai, 2 days)
Paying the Piper —maintenance, engine service, painting, power washing, Hurricane prep & de-prep. Wash & wax, repairs to Maine Cat, in the slip & on the hard, (Popoki Kai, 8 days)
OPB - Onboard other people’s boats (OPB), (Elixir & Nor’easter, thanks Chris & Buzz, 6 days)
Saving the Bay - Supporting Chesapeake Bay Foundation oyster reef restoration program by farming oysters at the dock (weekly, no double counting, I was already at the dock).
The rest of the time, living in the SpinSheet circulation area — priceless
