Charleston Race Week is off to a formidable start, with Bay sailors putting in a great showing.
The real news on the Bay is Ian Gordon's brand-spankin' new Farr 280, which is currently dominating the PHRF B fleet with two firsts and a second. "We're working through a couple of teething issues, but we had an absolutely blast on the water today," said Skipper Gordon.
In the J/80 fleet, it's Bay Sailors all the way with Will and Marie Crump's Do It for Denmark, Alex Kraus' Cool J, and Chris and Liz Chadwick's Church Key coming in 1-2-3, respectively. The fleet is dominated by Bay sailors, though, with only one boat from out of the Bay area. Still, it's good to see us taking the show on the road every once in a while.
Arthur Libby and Aden King are cleaning up in the J/22 fleet, as well, with first and second place on the docket. Keep it up!
And then there were the J/70s...
We were anticipating seeing over 100 boats in Charleston, so I have to say we're a little disappointed to see only 81 boats out. Ha!
The third race of the day has us wondering if Bay sailors decided to start team racing, their numbers were so great.
Henry Filter had an incredible day yesterday, coming in sixth, third, and first (!). He did well in 2013, so we were expecting this. We love it when our expectations are met, don't you?
Tom Bowen had a good day on Reach Around, with a second on the third race. He's currently in 19th place.
Kathy Parks and the gorgeous ladies on Sundog came in sixth in the third race, putting themselves in 32nd place overall. Cole Allsopp is going to be a late bloomer, with the blokes on Moxie coming in at 36th place. Brad Kauffman is sailing with Mike Coe on Mummbles, and he's currently in 57th with Catharine Evens right behind him at 65th.
We'll have more boats and more action throughout the weekend, so check back. And look for the May issue of SpinSheet, on newsstands May 1, for a full write-up!
