This just in from the 5 Gyres Institute, for a planet free of plastic pollution:
We're thrilled to announce our latest global voyage, the S.E.A. Change Expedition across the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre from June 2-23. On this, our 16th research voyage, we will be joined by musician, waterman, and activist Jack Johnson and friends, as well as plastic pollution advocates, scientists, film makers, artists, and other change-makers. We will also host "All Islands, All At Once," an international youth summit at the Island School in the Bahamas, with special guest Jack Johnson, in conjunction with the expedition.
"As someone who loves and lives in the ocean, I couldn't be more excited to be participating in 5 Gyre's S.E.A. Change Expedition and Youth Summit. I look forward to learning alongside the students while helping to raise awareness of the importance of reducing our dependency on single use plastics." - Jack Johnson
After our recent publication sharing the first global estimate on plastic in the world's oceans, this expedition is an opportunity to engage our community in solutions. S.E.A. Change stands for Science, Education and Action, and we look forward to continuing our cutting-edge research, as well as the opportunity to advocate design change as a solution for the global health crisis of plastic pollution.
We will be sailing aboard the Schooner Mystic, an elegant tall ship that calls New York City home. During the Expedition we will collect samples with 5 Gyres'
research equipment, including our manta trawl, AVANI trawl, and vertical trawl, to analyze marine plastic pollution on and below the ocean's surface. And equally important to the research, we will be engaging in daily dialogue with our crew of experts, sharing solutions, science, and creating digital assets to share with the world at large. All of our crew return to land inspired to drive solutions in their communities - this could include you!
Leg #3 of the S.E.A Change Expedition is open to our community. An application form and further information can be found here. We hope you will join our crew of change makers and ambassadors to help us drive solutions to plastic pollution on the S.E.A. Change Expedition this June!
Cheers,
Anna Cummins
