Yesterday morning, out of the mist on the Miles River in St. Michael's, floated two mystical tall ships.
Replicas of two of Christopher Columbus’ ships, the Niña and Pinta, docked at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and will stay there until May 18, with boarding opportunities available to the public. The ships are operated by the Columbus Foundation out of the British Virgin Islands.
We got to go on a tour of the ships and they are truly something to be seen! The ships were built by hand out of Brazilian hardwoods by a very primitive-looking shipyard in Brazil. The ships have a total of 13 crew onboard, and they travel the seas 11 months out of the year. Tours of the ships at the CBMM will be self-guided, but the crew members will be present if you have any questions.
