ABCW offers camaraderie with like-minded mariners, boater education, and more.
Members of America’s Boating Club Wilmington (ABCW) enjoyed warm winter socializing, some friendly Super Bowl posturing, and a fascinating presentation by David Gendell during their February Founder’s Day Zoom Social.
Gendell presented his new book, “The Last Days of the Schooner America: A Lost Icon at the Annapolis Warship Factory.” He explained how the schooner was an 1850’s technological marvel. In the summer of 1851, just weeks after a New York launch, she crossed the Atlantic to an upset victory against a fleet of champions. To this day the silver cup is still coveted by sportsmen. His book traces America’s history from design, build, and early racing career through her lesser-known Civil War service and the never-before-told story of her final days in Annapolis.
Gendell is an Annapolis native with extensive sailboat racing and passage making experience. In 1995, he cofounded SpinSheet and PropTalk magazines, and has authored the first and only book devoted to the 1875 Thomas Point Lighthouse, “Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse: A Chesapeake Bay Icon.”
For 86 years, ABCW members have proudly served northeastern Chesapeake Bay boaters. Their pride is second only to appreciation for strong and enabling helm leadership. Year-after-year, ABCW’s nominating committees ensure leadership continuity by recommending exceptional bridge and executive committee officers. On March 16, ABCW members will witness new officer swearing-in by the district education officer and enjoy a delicious brunch at Country House in Wilmington.
ABCW members enjoy camaraderie with like-minded mariners, provide boater education opportunities, and promote safe boating practices. To learn more, visit abc-wilmington.com or email [email protected].
