If you knew there were great jobs available working on boats, would you want one? If so, you should tune into the work of the Maryland Trades Association of Maryland (MTAM) whose staff has been listening to marina and boatyard owners who NEED MORE HANDS and are willing to train up young people for great careers in the industry. MTAM has developed concrete ways to connect potential employees to potential employers and create a new pool of younger workers in Maryland.
After screening 100 applications, 13 young people were selected as the 2017 intern class. On Saturday, they were busy in the Eastport neighborhood of Annapolis getting a good overview of the industry, various job types within it, and what they entail. Included in the day's events are:
- an overview of career paths (engine mechanics, electrical, marine composites & fiberglassing, etc)
- tours of Annapolis School of Seamanship, Mears Marina, Chesapeake Boating Club, and J Gordon;
- tips on how to excel at your job
- demonstrations on deisel engines, electrical systems, and a boating simulator
