The USCG is always there for us… What can we do for them?

How can we show our U.S. Coast Guard how much we appreciate their hard work, especially during this government shutdown when they’re working with no pay? We reached out to the Fifth Coast Guard District External Affairs office in Portsmouth, VA.

PA3 Joshua L. Canup responded, “At this time, Coast Guard units nationwide and throughout Hampton Roads are focusing on those operations required by law that provide for national security or that protect life and property.

“These operations include any functions that allow the Coast Guard to respond to incidents like oil spills or hazardous chemical releases; carry out search and rescue operations; respond to threats by water; conduct law enforcement and security patrols; and maintain safe and secure waterways. The training of exempt employees and required maintenance will continue, although at reduced capacity in some cases.”

How can we help?

“Members of the public wishing to help Coast Guard members impacted by the partial government shutdown are encouraged to contact Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA). CGMA provides loans and other assistance to Coast Guard members and their families.

What’s CGMA?

CGMA is the official relief society of the U.S. Coast Guard. While CGMA works closely with the Coast Guard, it is an independent non-profit charitable organization.

Established and operated by Coast Guard people for Coast Guard people, CGMA provides a way to extend compassion to one another in times of need. It serves as a vital financial safety net, promoting financial stability and general wellbeing, fostering high morale and encouraging a sense of loyalty to the Coast Guard.

CGMA assists members of the Coast Guard family during their time of financial need, through interest-free loans, grants, and counseling.
