Continuous learning for new sailors
On June 22, Youth Sailing Virginia (YSV) hosted an open house and brought together the local community for a vibrant celebration of Summer Sailstice on Mill Creek. The event welcomed new sailors and featured YSV's new fleet of 18 FJs and two Cape Dory Typhoon Weekenders.

The Summer Sailstice was the perfect time to announce the expansion of YSV’s Family Learn to Sail program and introduce a new membership initiative, aimed at encouraging continuous learning for new sailors. The Cape Dory Typhoon, an 18-foot full-keel boat with a comfortable "sit-in" cockpit similar to the FJ, is ideal for both adult and junior sail training on Mill Creek.
The event welcomed new sailors from across Hampton Roads, with one family traveling from as far away as Fredericksburg, VA, to join in the fun. Their experience was memorable, reflecting the day's success in advancing YSV's mission to promote sailing within the community.

Youth Sailing Virginia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to removing socio-economic barriers in sailing, fostering accessible pathways, and creating an inclusive environment for anyone interested in learning to sail. YSV offers a variety of programs, including summer camps, STEM in Sailing education, high school sailing, family learn-to-sail classes, adult courses, and membership opportunities. The YSV waterfront campus is also home to Christopher Newport University’s Varsity Sailing team.
Through these initiatives, YSV continues to provide opportunities for everyone in the community to experience the joys and benefits of sailing, ensuring that the spirit of adventure and learning is accessible to all!
