Who’s Leading the Pack? SpinSheet Century Club 2019

On the Leading Edge...

SpinSheet Century Club members enjoy some healthy competition, even if many of them are cruisers, so we thought we’d periodically report on those who are leading the pack reaching their goal of logging 100 days on the water within the calendar year.

Ewerwhon Award winners Sean Martin and Dave Nestel. The award was created in honor of Jack Sherwood for the SpinSheet Centurion who logs the most days on the water each year.

Keep in mind that is not a perfect science. Some Centurions are slow on email (because they’re on the water instead of at their desks!). For example, our Erewhon Award winner for the most days on the water in 2018, Sean Martin, is probably in third place, not fourth—2016 and 2017 Erewhon Awardee Dave Nestel is in third! We’re guessing Sean has a number bigger than the one listed below (his number as of April 28), so our top guys are neck in neck, as usual.

Based on prospective 2019 Centurions who responded to emails today, below is the leaderboard. Not bad at all considering the water temperature in Annapolis remains below 64 degrees. We expect these numbers to rise as the water and air warm up. Here’s our top 10 of 33 on our list *thus far* for the 2019 Century Club.

  1. Joe Cummings             100
  2. Alicia Tyrell                93
  3. Dave Nestel                68
  4. Sean Martin                 65
  5. Ashley Love                41
  6. Dave Stalfort              38
  7. Ken Vinson                 38
  8. Bill Wheary                 33
  9. Bruce Artman             25
  10. Bob Leichtman           24

Three-time SpinSheet Centurion Julianne DeGraw Fettus didn’t make our top 10 and she’s feeling behind…. She says:

“I'm really behind with days on the water this year, it's been a busy winter and spring with lots of boat projects, haul outs, boat commissionings, mast raisings, and bottom painting. Feels like I have 100 days of those so far. It's been tough to miss some really good sailing days since the beginning of the year, but the work now is setting me up to pay off with hopefully a great rest of the year on the water.

“I have been able to sneak 14 days in between projects. Started off the year with the Hangover bowl aboard Wiggy Wiggy, and a really great second half of Frostbites.

“Two highlights were helping with the delivery of a Cherubini 44 from Solomons to Annapolis in high winds, quite a civilized trip,  and the first race aboard Mikayla, a Farrier 33 which is the new replacement boat for Fair Curve, the Corsair 31 that I've crewed with for the last 8 years.”

We have faith that Julianne and the many others like her who are still below 20 days will catch up quickly.
