It started a couple years ago when local waterbugs began paddling their Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUPs) on local creeks and rivers. The craze quickly grew in popularity as paddlers, sailors, and others learned that SUPs are a fun way to get a great core workout. Last summer, we noticed those stand up paddlers had begun practicing yoga and pilates on their SUPs. Now they've brought their favorite workout indoors.
The Maryland Athletic Center (MAC) at Harbor East in Baltimore is offering a SUP fitness class in their pool each Tuesday and Thursday evening in March. The classes are taught by Ultimate WaterSports instructor Jessie Benson, who also leads classes outdoors in the warmer months.
A SUP fitness class hits all the major areas of a traditional workout regimen: strength, core, cardio, and balance. The Huffington Post and Baltimore Sun both recently reported on this cool new trend in SUP fitness, so expect to see similar classes coming to indoor pools around the Bay.
