You may remember this derecho photo we posted last summer from the Annapolis to Newport Race delivery home onboard Gus Ward's Crocodile. It turns out the crew had front row and "wet and thrashed" seats to an actual tsunami triggered by atmospheric events." Very rare event on the planet," according to the skipper.
Acccording to Joe Sienkiewicz of NOAA/ NWS Ocean Prediction center, the video below is "a simulation of the ocean response to the 2013 derecho. The sharp atmospheric pressure wave with the derecho was able to translate to the ocean and resulted in tidal surges and increased current up and down the western Atlantic. On the NOAA side we are considering trying to anticipate such events. I am in awe of the refraction that takes place to bring the wave into the coast."
