The Chesapeake Bay Trust is a nonprofit, grant-making organization dedicated to improving the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers through environmental education, community outreach, and local watershed restoration. Earlier this year the Trust held its annual 5K for the Bay at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis which sold out with more than 650 runners participating. On Saturday, October 25th, they are holding their 5K for the Bay... Part Deux at Seneca Creek State Park in Montgomery County. Registration is at 7:00 am, and the race, a 3.1 mile run/walk, will start at 7:45 am, with all proceeds benefitting Chesapeake Bay restoration and educational programs.
“We were so pleased that so many runners, walkers and friends came out to support the Chesapeake Bay Trust through our 5K for the Bay earlier this year,” said Molly Alton Mullins, the Chesapeake Bay Trust’s director of communications and race director.
The first 5K for the Bay was such a hit, that unfortunately, they had to turn many people away because it sold out. And because there wasn't enough room for everybody to run, the Trust launched its 5K for the Bay... Part Deux, so that everybody who wanted to have a great time running while supporting the Bay could. Participants will run along a trail around Clopper Lake, in Seneca Creek, which is widely considered one of Maryland's most beautiful outdoor places.
“We wanted to make this event really fun and family friendly while also getting people outside raising money for a great cause, restoring the Chesapeake Bay and our natural resources,” continued Mullins.
Rain or shine, this race will be a great opportunity for so many reasons. In case having a great time in a beautiful place while supporting a fantastic cause doesn't sound exciting enough, many local companies, such as Buffalo Wild Wings, Toyota Scion, Panera Gaithersburg, Fleet Feet Gaithersburg, Wegmans, the Bowie Baysox, and API Source, have all joined the Chesapeake Bay Trust to sponsor the race, in addition to the Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company, who is serving as the title sponsor for this event. All race participants will receive a tee shirt, gourmet coffee, bagels, and Buffalo wings, as well as prizes for the fastest racers in various age groups.
Pre-registration is $30 per runner ($35 on race day), students ages 10-17 are $10 and children nine and under are free. Leashed pets and joggings strollers are welcome. To register online and for more information, click here.
