Sail Baltimore, the staff and crew of NS Savannah, and the Port of Baltimore community will be celebrating National Maritime Day on Sunday, May 17. The National Maritime Day Commemoration, beginning at 11:30 a.m., will honor the 51st anniversary of the Savannah's first port call to Baltimore. McAllister Towing and the Baltimore City Fire Boat will supply a water cannon salute at the conclusion of the commemoration.
With a public open house and activities for ship lovers of all ages, there will be something to do for everyone. We will have more than 40 port exhibitors, a collection of LEGO Teach Fleet vessels, and a 24' x 56' pond for radio-controlled model boats and ships. Demonstrations will be run by several local area RC boat clubs. So far, these include the Philadelphia Ship Model Society, several private modelers South Carolina, and a local modeler with a 6' long model of the USS Constellation (coordinated by Historic Ships Baltimore). We will also have fifteen (or more) vessels on the pier:
- Army 949th TC (Floating Craft) Cat Lai (ST-915)
- Army Corp of Engineers Reynolds
- Association of Maryland Pilots Launch
- Baltimore City Fire Boat 1
- Baltimore City Harbor Trash Skimmer
- Baltimore County Fire Marine Unit
- Baltimore Police Marine Unit
- MdTAP Marine Unit Patrol Boat
- McAllister Towing Vessel
- Natural Resources Police Rescue Platform
- NOAA Bay Hydro II
- Vane Brothers Tug
- USCG 45' Response Boat
- USCG Auxiliary 30' Vessel
- Navy Operational Support Center Baltimore 44' Boat
You won't go hungry either. No, Savannah's galley and famed Radarange won't be open, but three of Baltimore's best food trucks will be there.
The event will be FREE (well, except for the food) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Local, free parking will be available with shuttle vans connecting the parking to the pier. To see a map and a schedule of events, please go to Port Fest Baltimore's website.
