Herrington Harbour SA sailed our last event of the year and it again had good breeze and perfect weather. Our fleet has truly be blessed with a great season of good sailing, steady breezes and exceptional weather.
6 AE-28's rendezvoused at G-83 south of Poplar Island Saturday at 1:30 PM. "Orion" with David and Cate Gantz, "Summer Solstice" with Mike and Tom Chernesky and "Skimmer" with Jack Detweiler and Jon Sauer, sailed from 1-AH together down to G-83 and met up with Paul Rohrkemper, "Folic" who sailed from Island Creek in Oxford and Bob Spann and Matt Hansen, "Resilient" and Bob and Dierdra Bradway, "Starry Night" that both sailed out from Herrington Harbor.
We had a steady wind of around 10kts out of the ENE and sailed a 7.99 NM course from G-83 to G-84 to C-81A to Herring Bay G-1 and Herring Bay R-2 to finish. Bob Spann started us with a "Rabbit Start" and we were off to weather for the first leg, a long reach for the second, a shorter beat for the third and a reach to the finish. Leads changed back and forth between 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th with a big Freighter splitting the fleet at one point and all in all making for a very interesting race. The order of finish was as shown below:
1) Skimmer
2) Folic
3) Resilient
4) Orion
5) Starry Night
6) Summer Solstice
We all sailed into Herrington Harbour and met at the picnic area for a social and awards and then had dinner together at the Marina Restaurant. Lucy Hansen, Marti Detweiler, Beth Whiteley and Madonna Chernesky joined us for these activities. Thanks to Bob Spann and Beth Whiteley for providing the snacks and the Bradways for providing the drinks(I think that we still need a collection for this) and Paul Rohrkemper for arranging and bringing the awards(Amanda, you have a bill coming).
The whole summer regatta season has been so much fun with 5, 6 and 7 boats on the line. The Rendezvous added a special element to the season in that everyone that raced had a chance to spend a few hours together with great conversation and camaraderie because we all came into the same place with our boats. It was a fitting end to a tremendous season. All in all, 12 boats in our fleet participated in at least one of the regattas and/or the rendezvous. We need to get even more people involved and find some others to buy these boats.
Paul Rohrkemper (who sailed single handed this weekend, by the way and almost beat us while taking pictures), will be doing the recap on the website and hopefully embellishing and correcting everything that I have said.
We need to meet before the end of the year to plan next year's schedule. We'll try to get some suggested dates and location out to everyone in the next few weeks. I also think that we could have some more discussions on cruising, boat handling and maintenance for those folks that haven't joined in on the racing. All food for thought and a need to keep expanding the fleet activities.
