The Chesapeake Yacht Club (CYC) held their first sailing regatta since its founding in 1947.
With more than 25 sailboats in its membership the enthusiastic sailors at CYC decided it was time to initiate sailing regattas. The plan is to host two regattas per year, Spring and Fall. The first ever Fall Regatta was held on Saturday, October 19 on the West River under somewhat cloudy and overcast skies with more than enough wind to make it interesting and challenging to the teams. A little sprinkle of rain mixed in did nothing to dampen the spirits of the teams or the spectators. The start was off the flagpole and went around the PCSC marks “X” and “F” back to the starting line. Ten yachts participated and many spectators cheered from the point. The race was a PHRF pursuit race with values ranging from 75 to 198. The first three to finish were: 1st Place – LOGOS, Tony Syme; 2nd Place – Galivant, John Murray; and 3rd Place, Lucia, John Klimek. The teams gathered afterward in the lounge for an awards ceremony, refreshments and tall tales.
The Spring Regatta is scheduled for late April, 2014. With a full calendar of events, CYC invites members and guests to come join the fun. For more information on this and other fun activities contact CYC at 410-867-1500 and visit the website
Fleet Captain John Grannis is one of the first contributors to the second annual Chesapeake Yacht Club Toys For Tots campaign. CYC is collecting now through December 14 at the club located at 4943 Hine Drive in Shady Side, MD. Collection efforts last year produced over $3000 in toys and cash donations. Toys collected will be distributed to needy children in Prince George and Anne Arundel Counties. We invite our sailing neighbors in Shady Side to bring a new unwrapped toy to our collection box. CYC is proud to support the US Marine Corp Reserve Toys For Tots Campaign and the brave men and women of our armed forces.
