On Saturday, March 8, the Seafarers Foundation held it's annual Mardi Gras Celebration with almost 500 in attendance at Martin's Crosswinds, in Greenbelt, Md. Master of Ceremonies, Capt. Tyrone Barksdale introduced SYC Commodore Mel Wyche, who, with Tanya Morris, SYC Auxiliary President, crowned Dr. Bill Woodward and his lovely wife Dr. Joan Woodward as the King and Queen of the event. The Seafarers were splendid during their march to the tune of "When the Saints Come Marchin' In" and members of the Seafarers Auxiliary strutted their stuff during their Chesapeake take on the traditional "Nawlins" Umbrella Parade. Proceeds from the celebration support the Thanksgiving dinners for Seniors and the Summer Youth Program, which involves over 50 kids each year from Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties in programs that teach them to swim in addition to recreational boating safety, navigation, first aid, etiquette, meteorology, and environmental protection while exposing them to sail and power boating. Mardi Gras participants also got their first look at the Seafarers Yacht Club's 2014 Cruise Schedule, which Fleet Capt. H.B. Burrell promises will be both full and fun-raising.
