Old Point Comfort Yacht Club (OPCYC) held its Summer Party Saturday August 2, 2014 at their Fort Monroe Clubhouse. Fifty attendees in Hawaiian attire enjoyed great food, cool weather and each other’s company through the afternoon and evening. OPCYC Commodore Bob Killebrew , shown at center in picture above, called the party to order for a very short business meeting and gave the members a status update on Fort Monroe’s transition from an active military post to it’s new future as a cruising and vacation destination on the Southern Bay. Currently managed by the State of Virginia and the National Park Service, the old fort now boasts public beaches, recreational services, a museum of the historic fort and is within easy walking distance of several excellent restaurants and a supermarket.
Of interest to all Chesapeake boaters, Old Point Comfort Marina, the homeport of OPCYC, is now open to the general boating public with slips, fuel and pump out facilities; a new restaurant atop the marina is scheduled to open this fall. During the transition, OPCYC has grown to 190 plus sailors and power boaters concentrated on the Southern Bay, but also scattered around the globe; the OPCYC burgee flies now in French Polynesia as well as throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
