Annapolis Sailors Club (ASC) offers New Sailor Training (part one) April 19th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for new sailors or for those having sailed primarily as passengers without the opportunity to learn very basic terminology and skills.
The majority of ASC Skippers generally prefer not teaching sailing basics to ASC crew. In addition, you will find that if you are primarily sailing on OPB's (other people's boats), there will come a point where your learning stalls.
What Will be Covered? Big vs. small boat, what to wear, environmental concerns, crew etiquette, Skipper expectations, boat and sail parts and how they make the boat go, heeling, steering and lines, wind direction, road hazards and signs, wind theory, point of sail, anatomy of tacking/gybing, is some of what will be covered. All students will leave with homework in preparation for Part II.
This year we will be adding an additional module addressing (and showing) gear for different sailing scenarios, etiquette on the ASC boats, what to expect from raft-ups, and an introduction into coastal or open water sailing (as crew -- what you need to prepare for, minimal skills you should know to be able to contribute, and think about in pursuing these kinds of sailing opportunities).
We will also everyone leads for further sailing education as well as introduce some local area organizations that let you share costs to take out their boats as crew and skipper!
Who is Teaching? All the sailing 'meat and potatoes' is going to be taught by ASC Skipper Joel Aronson. We all know him as an ocean racing skipper (s/v The Office) and lover of heavy weather sailing. Unbeknownst to most, he was a sailing instructor in his college days and is putting that back on to teach the classroom portion for ASC 'newbie' sailors. Vicki Hurt will be doing the gear and coastal preparation module.
Part II is a later class on the water - a few hours reinforcing what you learned and practice at all the major positions on a boat (including the helm). A few ASC skippers that love to teach will be doing this follow up session on their boats.
This training is meant as a solid sailing primer - expectations are that all ASC sailors that are at this fundamental level follow up with one of the many 3-day (or longer) keelboat sailing class opportunities we are afforded in our area.
