Herring Bay is coming back to life after a cold, winter’s nap. The ospreys are nesting. The boat yards are buzzing with sanders. The cruisers are checking their rum lockers. The racers are out practicing spinnaker sets and douses. There’s even a jellyfish or two bobbing around.
Herrington Harbour Sailing Association (HHSA) celebrated the beginning of the season with the Season Kickoff Breakfast on April 18. This annual event included pancakes, mimosa, bloody mary’s and a lot of cheery, excited sailors. After breakfast, everyone rushed off to complete boat preparations.
HHSA’s cruising schedule is filling up. Cruisers will re-discover the Bay with the Cinco de Mayo, Thalassa Cocktail Party, and Memorial Day cruises.
Earlier in April, HHSA concluded the off-season with the Race Management and the second New Racer Seminar. Keith Mayes reviewed rules and race committee operations for the veteran racing skippers and crews. Dave McCullough presented race preparation and the starting sequence from the new racing skippers point of view. Women Underway also got ready to hoist their sails with a review of mainsail and jib trim.
HHSA Racing starts on April 29 with Practice Day. Practice Day includes multiple starts and a quick trip around the bouys. Series 1 starts on May 6. HHSA will have three 6-race Wednesday Night series from May to September. The Spring Regatta is May 16. The full racing schedule and weekly racing results are posted in the HHSA website forums at www.hhsa.org.
