On April 11 over 70 Corinthians and guests assembled at the downtown Marriott hotel in Annapolis for a spring cocktail party and a standing room only presentation by two members of the Association of Maryland Pilots.
The event was organized by Corinthian members Brian and Marj Callahan and the group welcomed Captain Elizabeth Christmas and Captain Brian Hope who gave a fascinating account of the history of piloting on the Chesapeake Bay.
Captain Elizabeth, with close to 20 year experience as a Chesapeake Bay pilot, described in detail the day to day responsibilities and activities of the pilots. Captain Brian, with over 40 years of experience, covered the history of the profession, from the days in the early 19th century when sailing schooner pilot boats would race each other to be the first to meet incoming vessels, to the high speed launches currently in use to carry the pilots to meet the vastly larger ships navigating the bay waters.
Brian, an accomplished marine artist, included in his presentation many of his own paintings of historical events involving the Chesapeake Bay pilot boats.
