The Southern Bay Cru’z Club (SBCC), a member of the Yacht Clubs of America, under the command of Commodore “Rod” Rodriguez, announces its 2015 Training, Cruising and Social Schedule.
Training sessions are generally held on the 2nd Saturday of each month (unless otherwise advertised) and held in its Clubhouse at Vinings Marina in Norfolk, VA above the Surfrider Restaurant. Offerings so far this year have included navigation topics: Rules of the Road and Navigation Charting and Plotting.
This was followed by De-mystify Boat Bottom Cleaning and Zincs and Electricity 101 On your Boat. In March the classes covered Canvas and Glass Enclosure Care and Maintenance, Secrets and Methods of Restoring and Protecting Wood on your boat, as well as a field trip to the Commercial Marine Simulator at Tidewater Community College.
For the remainder of the training year, which runs through August, the Club will feature the following: two consecutive weekend training days will have the Virginia Sail and Power Squadron presenting the Virginia Required Safe Boating Certification Course, How to Cruise as a Group and the ever popular “Partners In Command” hands-on training course wheel.
The Cruising schedule has the Club travelling to Kings Creek, Smithfield, Tidewater Yacht, an extended cruise to the Rappahannock River and/or St Michaels, Tabbs Creek, Salt Ponds and a yet to be announced South Bound cruise.
There is also an exciting schedule of social events to round out the SBCC “three pillars” concept. The season opener will be a 3-day weekend event at Vinings Marina commencing on Friday, May 22 through Sunday, May 25.
This will be followed by a Mid-Summer Party, a Movie Night, the 6th Annual Oyster Fest, a Chowder, Stews and Bowls Crockpot Night, the Va. Classic Football night and, in December a full slate with a Christmas Party, Light the Creek Festivities and Lighted Boat Parade to close out the year.
