Starting off a busy May, Back Creek Yacht Club (BCYC) members celebrated the Club’s 13th Annual Change of Watch Ball May 2nd at the Oyster Cove clubhouse in Grasonville, hosted by Madi Yates and Mary Ross. The event welcomed new Flag Officers: Commodore Bob Higginbotham, Vice-Commodore Jamie Ritter, Rear Commodore Terry Bidnick, Fleet Captain Colin Soucy, Secretary Mary Ross, and Treasurer Mary Bowie, and introduced new Club members attending.
A renaming ceremony for Bill and Laurie Crosley’s new boat Lali was then performed, who complied with tradition by distributing champagne to the sea gods and attendees. A dinner of prime rib and shrimp was consumed and later worked off with dancing to Mike Lange and the Tiki Barbarians.
On May 9th a Cruise Captain’s briefing was held at Fleet Captain Colin and Christine Soucy’s house, followed by Bratwursts and Beer. A mid-week evening picnic took place on Crab Creek at Molly and Wally Stone’s house May 13th.
On May 23rd, the Club’s Spring eight day Bay Cruise started with over a dozen boats participating. The first anchorage was by St. Helena Island in the Severn, then on to a Rhode River raftup, over to the Miles River Yacht Club by St. Michaels, then a raft up at Water Hole Creek near Knapps Narrows, over to Brewers Boat Yard at Oxford, dining first at the Tred Avon Yacht Club and the next night on grilled pork loin at the Marina.
The final stop was Knapps Narrows Marina to celebrate the cruise end with an Eastern Shore Crab Boil before heading home May 31. On June 20th, the Club’s lobster feast (with roast beef an option) took place as usual at the Stones on Crab Creek. As usual, a pancake breakfast followed the next morning prepared by Flip, Flop and Drop.
