PSA's Second Annual Moonlight Race

CapturePotapskut Sailing Association will be hosting their second Moonlight Race, scheduled for June 6th, 2015. As in prior years, the start and finish will be at Baltimore light, unless the race is shortened due to wind conditions.

2014 saw major changes to this event with all classes now qualifying for long distance credits. Only one class ( multihull A) will sail a course to Poole’s Island Light. All other classes will sail as far north as Craighill Light and round other Region II government marks as designated by the CBYRA Region 2 chart.

So what’s new? Well, a couple of things. The success of a few short-handed races last year has resulted in the formation of a new sailing organization: the Chesapeake Short-handed Sailing Society. PSA’s 2014 Moolight Race was among several featuring a short-handed class to see what interest would materialize. As a total surprise, the short-handed class was the largest fleet in the race!

MRSA’s own Randy and Warren Richter sailed their Soverel 33 “Pressure drop“ to victory over 8 other competitors entered in this class.

The 2015 event will feature two short-handed classes – both spinnaker and non-spinnaker. There is continuing discussion that proposes to create yet another class for single-handed racing, so stay tuned for more details later this year. Notice of race is posted on Regatta Network or on PSA’s website: psasailing.org

One last note: PSA also includes a cruising class in this as well as their Rock Hall races in September. This is truly a cruising class and does not allow spinnakers. PSA also hosts a hearty breakfast with Bloody Mary’s at their clubhouse on Blackhole Creek following the race. Racers can come by boat or land if they prefer.
