Cruising on Granary Creek

The fifth event of the Chesapeake Bristol Club (CBC) 2015 season was Mini-Cruise #1 - the 17th annual 2015 Memorial Day Weekend Wye River Rendezvous at Wye Island NRMA Lodge and Facility on Granary Creek. There were an estimated 80 participants including 25 boats. The event was a collaborative effort with Eastport Yacht Club (EYC) and Magothy River Sailing Association (MRSA).

CBC had six boats participating and a number of members who joined the party by land. The CBC boats arrived early Saturday afternoon and most anchored in or near the first cove to port on Granary Creek. The water level throughout the creek was low because of prevailing northwest winds that blew much of the water out the creek.

Happy hour was on Scudder, with Mickey Doran hosting. That evening, after an onshore picnic, there was a showing of the movie “All is Lost” starring Robert Redford.Sunday was the day of competition. Preparations were made in the morning and events run in the afternoon. Following the four-person tests of knot tying, ski walking, geo-egg-hunt, and baseball toss, all members gathered in the Pavilion for the Nautical Jeopardy contest followed by a pot luck dinner with barbequed chicken and beans by George’s Barbecue.

GranaryFollowing dinner winners of the day’s activities and the art contest received their awards—wines locally produced by CBC member Bob Clopp. CBC members Mickey Doran and Will Hottle created the model boat race kits, Mickey Doran developed and ran the art poster contest, and Tom Finnan and Joel Gross ran the ball toss event. The sailboat event had to be scrubbed because winds were too high at race time, but we’re ready for next year.

The club’s next two events are: 1) Mini-Cruise #2 to the Magothy with anchoring in Eagle Cove off Gibson Island, June 23-24; and 2) Fireworks and Summer Cruise of the North East Chesapeake Bay starting at Lankford Marina on 7/2 and ending at Gibson Island on 7/11. Note, interested prospective members and guests are welcome to join for any or all of the events, but please notify the Commodore (Marty Suydam, [email protected]) if you would like to participate.
