Swapping Sailboats for SUPs

On a Friday evening at West River Sailing Club (WRSC) sailors pushed off the beach and headed out on the West River, but instead of sheets in their hands and an eye on the breeze, these sailors grasped paddles and focused on keeping their balance.

The guys at East of Maui came to WRSC for a free paddle boarding demo and brought several boards for sailors to try. Paddle boarding has grown in popularity and are increasingly spotted on the West River and nearby waterways. Many sailors wanted to find out what this was all about!

After an informative tutorial from Mark Bandy on the basics of paddling and how to stay safe, the new paddlers were off! Those who braved the waters, their first time atop a paddle board, found it took a little practice to find their sea legs but most were up on their feet and heading across Tenthouse Creek after just a few moments! The evening was calm, the company excellent, and it was a great night for a paddle.
