What is the reward for running a successful education program? Well, for the Kent Narrows Sail & Power Squadron, it is earning seven awards at this years’ District 5 Educational Conference held in Cherry Hill, NJ over the Halloween weekend.
KNSPS is a Squadron member of District 5 of the United States Power Squadrons.
USPS offers a comprehensive range of courses in subjects like Seamanship, Piloting and Navigation, Cruise Planning, Engine Maintenance, Marine Electronics, Sailing, and much more. These courses are taught by experienced member instructors. Group instruction enhances the learning process and makes it more enjoyable too.
The current Senior Education Officer, Lt/C John Lock, SN-CN, has been guiding the education program for the past 3 years. Under his leadership and with the assistance of 1st/Lt Joseph Burke, SN-CN, 2015 was a very successful year for the Education Committee and the Squadron. KNSPS is the recipient of the following awards:
Caravelle Award – 1st Place – Presented to the Squadron showing the greatest percentage increase in completions of the Seamanship, Piloting and Advanced Piloting courses during the previous education year.
Workboat Award – 1st Place – Recognizes Squadrons that have done the most work teaching members in both elective and advanced courses. It is based on the total number of members who have completed these courses.
Henry Sweet Award for Education Excellence – 2nd Place
Prince Henry Trophy – 3rd Place - Presented to the Squadron with the greatest percentage increase in completions of the Junior Navigation and Navigation courses during the education year.
The District 5 Seamanship Award in Memory of Kenneth G. Smith – 3rd Place
Two individual Awards were also presented:
Henry E. Sweet Individual Educational Award (for those achieving the grade of SN): Awarded to John Locke, SN-CN and John Murphy, SN-CN
And the Charles F. Chapman Award for Excellence in Teaching to John Locke, SN-CN
