Racing Team: Alan Bomar
Great racing
Race 1 1st place PHRF class B/C
Race 2 1st place PHRF class B/C
The OPCYC round the lights race is one where we won our class but never overall. It is a pursuit race where each boat must round bothe Middle Ground light inthe Hampton Roads harbor and Thimble Shoals light in the chesapeake bay. Eithr light 2st in either direction
This year we elected to round Middle Ground light 1st . At the mid point of tge race we felt those that went to Thimble Shoals were ahead. We thought we would be racing for the "1st wrong way boat".
As we returned from Thimble Shoals, we were surprised to not see any boats coming out of Hampton Roads. In the harbor tge wind had lightened and we realized we were racing for 1st overall.
We held off the boats behind us only losing the lead to a PHRF "A" boat for a short time, winning 1st place back sailing into Mill Creek to the finish line.
1st phrf C.
1st overall. "roundabout" will be added to the ground tge lights trphy- a floor stave from Thimble Shoals light showcased at OPCYC.
CCVR Triple tunnel terror race is a new pursuit event that tours the Hampton Roads harbor. It sails to the edges of yhree tu nels that enlose Hampton Roads.
This year, the wind was right for the J/24 and we were able take 1st in the PHRF B/C class and 1st overall
Great sailingbon Wednesday nights in October. By tge 3nd it is night racing.
Crazy night with a big storm in the middle. We dropped out and reached toqard home.
Race committee for HYC Wednesday night racing
I appreciate Race Committees that run sailboat races. They are a key to our sport that requires dedication and skill. Setting a good starting line and finishing line, a course and running the start sequence takes practice. We are lucky on the Chesapeake Bay to have great PROs. However, too often there are complaints about Race Committee performance.
Hampton Yacht Club has a "cure" for the complainers and knows how to grow Race Committee appreciation.
Hampton Yacht Club host Wednesday night racing from April through September. There is a set start time for a warning signal, four predestined courses and a set of flags. Skippers who regularly do Wednesday Night races are assigned a night to be the Race Committee. Not help, to be the PRO.
So, we all must find a RC team, pick a course, set a fair starting line, launch three fleets of Racers, the record the immediate finishes and post the results. It makes skippers and crews humble and appreciate every Race Committee. After a time or two, it is one Wednesday night that we look forward to. Every year, I want to be as good as my friends John McCarthy and Brian Diabler. One day, I might get that good.
Those "beer can races" are a great opportunity to try one's skills. Thank you, Hampton Yacht Club.
Great series for roundabout
Great Wednesday night series out of Hampton yachy club. Come join us on roundabout. If we do not have room, we will find a boat for you to sail.
A winter series on club boats opened to sailors who want to be on the water. Join us Sunday's at 1200 across January, February & March
Great day on the water.

Multi day regatta in tge southern bay. Sailed 11 races to a 3rd place overall.
Great to sail one design

I like spinsheet crew parties. We brought Gary into the Hampton Roads sailing community.
CCV-R spring series. Sailed to 1st place winning the tie breaker. Great racing.

Great racing in the fog to a first in class and second overall.
Race committee for a YSV Regatta
Great program offered as part of your CBYRA membership
Day 1 of each year can be started in Hampton Roads with the HYC/OPCYC Dana Dillon New years day Race. This year I raced in Reflex with Jason Abernathy in the new to him J/24. The day began foggy but turned into a beautiful spring day on the 1st of January. 70F on January 1, 2022 was pretty fantastic especially as the wind filled we finished 5 overall behind 3 PHRF A Class boats and a C&C 101 sailing in the PHRF Non spin Class. Reflex was 1st in the PHRF B/C class and we'll ahead of the fleet behind the 1st 5 boats. It was a great day.
So, after winning the 2020 HYC Gaboon, I polished the Gaboon trophy as required. At least, the outside. I told Rich Ash, the HYC club manager, that I had to win it back to polish the inside, which appears to never been done. As such, we lined up and won the pursuit race over all going away for a second year in a row. Just like EWE would have done.

OVERALL WINNER of the 44th GABOON RACE – Alan Bomar and crew in his light blue J/24, ROUNDABOUT! Alan won the staggered start, a.k.a. pursuit, race by passing those who started before him and fending off the majority of the 18 boats bearing faster handicaps and starting after the J/24. This was the 44th rendition of the annual event, and the early winter-ish day with breezes in the low teens seemed made to order. It was chilly on the water and that made it even warmer by comparison ‘round the post-race gathering in the HYC bar. Awards will be presented tomorrow night, Tuesday, December 7, at HYC Awards Night. That includes the Gaboon Spittoon to overall winner Alan Bomar. Eighteen boats entered the 2021 Gaboon Race. Second Overall was Danger Paws, sailed by Neil Ford and Lis Biondi, and third overall was “Mr. Gaboon”, Phil Briggs, sailing Feather. Winners of their PHRF Fleets within the overall finish were: PHRF C: Alan Bomar, Roundabout: PHRF B: Paul Clifford, Wind Dancer; and PHRF A: Neil Ford and Lis Biondi, Danger Paws. Phil Briggs, as always (literally, all 44) was Event Chairman; and John McCarthy and Buk Lawrence handled the starts and finishes of the race.
Thank you to my crew David Stalfort, Lee Fairchild, Derek Landeau. More pictures and speed graphs are on the the Century Club Website.
Thank you to Joe Lupton Photography for the photo.
Great benefits of joining CBYRA
It was still Day light savings time so we did one more Wednesday night race. Only two boats however it was a beautiful evening.
In 2021 after the October fest series there was one more Wednesday night on November 3rd before day light savings time ended. So we went Sailboat Racing.
We went to Middle ground light first and were the third boat to Thimble Shoals light. We past the two ahead of us however we let five larger boats get past us by the finish. We were first in class and sixth overall.
It was a great day.
HYC has racers serve as race committee during the season fir Wednesday night racing. It is a great day to learn the challenges of race committee and makes sailors much more appreciative of those that do Race Committee for our races. It is much harder to race without the many race committee volunteers on the Chesapeake Bay.
This was a race from off Willoughby bank to the Chesapeake Light. We sailed it on the Bowman 46 Castanet owner by Niel Ford. It was a great sail to the light and we were becalmed on the return at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.
Great regatta after not having a regatta in 2020wecsailed in C fleet with 5 boats. We finished 2nd to the J/24 Quicky.
It was a great set of 4 Windward Leeward races and a long distance race. April 18, 2021, April 25, 2021 and May 5, 2021.
roundabout finished 2nd overall in the series.
We might sailing is a great way to break up the week. In Hampton Roads, Hampton Yacht Club host a Wednesday night series from April through September.
It is a time we bring on those who want to learn about sailing and a time to do crew training.
Join us on the docks at Hampton yacht club on Wednesday.
Great sail on Castanet, Neil Ford and Liz Biondi's Bowman 46 corsair CB YWL. Great sail in 16-20 kts . We scored a 2bd place in Cruising. 9th overall.
We have practiced with our new Sailmon max to ping the line and used it to hit this pursuit start within 4 second of our start time rolling at hull speed. We cruise from there passing the four boats in front of us and never letting anyone catch us. This was a waterline boat speed race with few tacks. This winter, I learned heavy air techniques from a North sails J/24 webinar with Will Wells. He taught me to ease the genoa to the lifelines when overpowered, keep the main trimmed, feathe, keep the boat flat and the boat accelerates and climbs. It is really cool and really fast. I no longer fumpband flog my main. Next we sailed a great tight reach under spinnaker burning down when we heeled up. The end result is that we beat the scratch boat in the fleet by 0.25 nm. 1st in class 1st over all. "Smok-in" boats speed. I think my rudder is still smoldering. What a great way to end the 2020 season.
I am proud to support Youth Sailing Virginia. It is a fantastic organization in a perfect location. Come visit us.
Ok. We hung out all day and no wind until the evening then we went fir a fun sail. Will Bomar, thank you for coming down from Annapolis. I was disappointed I was not able to show you how to race a J/24.

Sailed in HYC Frostbite. Scored a 2-2-1 in phrf b/c fir a solid 2nd place finish. Ended the series on 11/29/2020 with a solid in using the one season old North Club race J/24 genoa. It is a good tool.
Another great day. We sailed to Middle ground light first under spinnaker. The wind was supposed to lay down but it built to 25kts. That was too much for Liz B, Ray N and I with the 150 up. So we went bare headed ( thanks Ray) and put up the 100. We took off from that point and walked the boats around us. We surfed under the jib and main at some undocumented super speed from Thimble Shoals Light to Fort Monroe. We were q1st in C class and 4 the overall. A "smoking" great day.
Lucky enough to run races for high school Sailors on Mill Creek at Fort Monroe fir Youth Sailing Virginia. It is great to see sailors from all over Hampton Roads with 18 boats on the water. They learn quivk to stay on the correct side of a starting line when you pull out the "I" flag.
Come check out the Mill Creek venue. There is nothing better on the east coast. Thank you to the city of Hampton and the Fort Monroe Authority.
I really enjoy race committee on Mill Creek. Youth Sailing Virginia has such a great venue. Thank you Joan Patterson for the photo.
Great racing even though we were blown off the water on day 1 and broke a halyard on day 2.
Great day with short races.
From SBRNYCU
On Saturday, HAMPTON SPRINTS became a COVID-modified event of multiple, short one-lap races. Five (5) boats took to the race course mid-day Saturday, on the front edge of the remnants of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Laura. The competitors split into 2 fleets, Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker, and raced for an hour and one-half before the building winds drove them off the course. RESULTS: Spinnaker Group (3 boats): 1.Roundabout, Alan Bomar (2-1-2-2); 2.Myrage, Christian Schaumloffel (1-2-4/ocs-1); 3.Callinectes, Ben Cuker (3-3-1-3). Non-Spin Group (2 boats):1.Seeker, Alan Johnson (1-1-1); 2.Luna Blu, Keith Midgette (2-2-2). High-5! to Roundabout, the only boat to fly a chute in any race! Race Officer: John Blais.
Ok roundabout is back in service. Uss 85 after 5 months in overhaul.
The HYC annual regatta was a great shakedown.

I am vice president bof Youth Sailing Virginia.
Ok let's get racing in this Covid19 world. A double handed sail in a J/24 ought to lend itself to social distancing. And at least I have a great Spinsheet neck gaiter. Who new I would be wearing it beyond sailing days. It makes great work attire. Much more functional than a tie.
We also started sail training with "Steve the frat cat". Check him out on instagram.
It is time for Wednesday night sailing. It started late this year around June 17. At least we are on the water and sailing wearing a Spinsheet neck gaiter.
Ok HYC Wednesday night on June 10 the was scrubbed due to bad weather's. So this was the first Wednesday night sailing if the season and we ran a great race.
J/24s are great boats. I have a very good boat hull # 1507 for sale. This summer I took several people out include one fellow new to sailing. We had a great day. Unfortunately for me I think he bought a Catalina 22. The Catalina 22 had a table and cushions. Hmmm. I decide to start showing Flip with cushions. I am not sure what I can do about the table. I guess it is a design flaw? Rodney !!!!! :)
