Racing Team: Lee Budar-Danoff
I ran and taught MYC junior sail camp for the week of July 8, 2024.
The pageant is owned and hosted by Maryland Yacht Club. There are many volunteer days involved, supporting young women in our yacht club community who volunteer for charities, represent their clubs, and compete in the pageant.
The Rock Creek Racing Association, RCRA, does 4 6-race series during the season. Series 2 & 3 are done in conjunction with NPSA, the North Point Sailing Association. We cross the Patapsco River to join each other to race!
Rock Creek Racing Association and Maryland Yacht Club work together to put on this race on the Patapsco River, using marks between the five forts you can see along the course (Smallwood, Howard, Carroll, McHenry, and Armistead). MYC hosts the post-race social. This is an event I coordinate and run - we have fun, and have slips for boats who want to come early on Friday or stay Saturday night. This was also the first time we took our eldest's new boyfriend out racing! I've run a mostly teens-learning-to-sail-and-race crew, which is how I grew up. The Magothy River Sailing Association hosts a clever "ice breaker" tune up race at the end of April. There are three different start marks so you can start at the one closest to your home port. We race around a triangle and finsh where we started. This race had very little wind, sadly, and we had to retire...not to mention we hooked something on our prop right before our start! The diver confirmed it later on - that was a first for us.
We have 4 series of 6 races each. Our second and third series we do in conjunction with the North Point Sailing Association - more boats on the line! RCRA members take turns doing RC and hosting a post-race dinner.
This four-part series is being offered to members of CBYRA. The four webinars are on Steering, Tacking, Decision-Making, and Low-risk Racing. The winter months are perfect to review sailing and racing skills. Dave has been as always an excellent coach and instructor, providing copies of his Speed & Smarts for pre-reading, and running a 1.5 hour webinar that includes the opportunity to ask questions during the webinar and get answers either during or afterwards. I know I really appreciate the educational opportunities CBYRA makes available to members!
I was voted in as the Secretary for the Chesapeake Racer Cruiser Association at the annual general meeting held on January 14, 2023. At this event I ran the presentation, and Zoom, where we reviewed the bylaws and class rules, and the handicap rating system we use (ORR-Ez). I gave out trophies I designed and ordered for the NOTB fleet series winners. We presented the Annapolis series winners as well as the Boat of the Year trophy Lunch followed, with time for members to meet and discuss how the past year went, and the upcoming season.
