Racing Roundup August 17-18
We got so spoiled with that little spell of fall weather that we almost forgot it was August, but then, last weekend happened. Chesapeake racers did what they do—they showed up and proved that they can take the heat! Here’s your SpinSheet racing roundup for the weekend of August 17-18 on the Chesapeake and beyond.
CRAB Cup
We can’t help but think of our old friend, the late, great Don Backe, at this time of year and how happy he would be that the organization he founded, Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB), is alive and going strong, as is the fundraiser that began under his watch as the Boatyard Bar & Grill Regatta for CRAB is still thriving as the CRAB Cup. Still a great and well-attended pursuit race, still a great and well-attended party at Eastport Yacht Club. SpinSheet was on the water and at the party, and it was yet again, a swell, if not terribly windy event.
Eighty two competing boats showed up August 17 for the light-air race and the lighthearted awards party at EYC afterward. Here are top three results (below).

Viper Worlds
Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (Long Beach, CA) will be hosting the 2019 Viper 640 World Championship powered by Goslings from August 17-24. The host of the Viper’s 2014 North American Championship and the home of the world’s largest fleet of the Viper 640 sportboat, ABYC has the experience, the resources, and the volunteers to make this a true World Championship.
Ending today, ABYC’s Pre-Worlds concluded after six races on the outside course off Long Beach where Geoff Ewenson (Annapolis, MD) atop the leaderboard. In essence, given the “pre” aspect of the regatta, some crews didn’t sail all the races. Of note is 2017 Viper 640 North American Champion Marcus Eagan (Mandeville, LA) who won all four races he sailed. Warm-regatta results are here.
Stay tuned to the Viper 640 FB page as the regatta unfolds:

2nd Stewart Harris, Alright Them
3rd Andrew Tudor, ID 16
