Racing Roundup July 13-15
The weekend started on a tragic note at the convergence of the Chester and Corsica Rivers. The 32-foot log canoe Mystery capsized—an ordinary event, as all log canoe sailors know—yet one of the 17 crew members was not accounted for after the capsize. After a search and rescue operation, including many in the log canoe family who came as far as the Miles River to help, on Sunday morning rescuers found the body of Stephanie Meredith, 35, of Easton.
Any loss of life in sailboat racing affects us, but this one, on a beautiful summer’s evening on our beloved Chesapeake-born canoes, really hits home and reminds us all of the inherent dangers in our sport—and just how quickly a pretty summer evening can turn into a nightmare. SpinSheet’s editor already had a soft spot for the Mystery crew, as they took her out sailing many moons ago... now her heart and the hearts of the entire sailing community go out to the Schaubers and their extended log canoe family. Team SpinSheet extends our deepest condolences to Stephanie’s family. Find a more detailed story here.
EYC Boomerang Race
On Saturday evening, more than 70 boats embarked on the Eastport Yacht Club’s third annual Boomerang Race, an 50-plus-mile overnight race around government marks, starting and ending at EYC. Following breakfast and bloodies at the club, racers go home to nap and return at lunchtime for a pleasant afternoon party with great food and live music.

East of Maui – Eastport Yacht Club Chesapeake Stand-Up Challenge
It’s no secret that we here at SpinSheet are big SUP’ers, so the East of Maui – EYC Chespaeake SUP Challenge is an event we eagerly look forward to, whether we’re racing or not. Starting at 8:30 a.m. more than 100 competitors raced on 1-mile, 3-mile, and 7-mile (from EYC to Tolley Pt) courses, and then returned to the club for a delightful party from post-race ~10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Boy do we wish more regatta organizers would pay attention to one very positive aspect of this party: the music is NOT TOO LOUD. Do you ever hear someone say that at a sailing party? At the SUP Challenge, the live music is played at a pleasant volume that adds a party atmosphere yet allows conversation over a beer with fellow racers.
Mark Bandy and Mark Saunders of East of Maui handed out awards (glasses and bags of protein bars) to competitors, and fun was had by all. Find complete SUP Challenge 2018 results here.

BCSC Junior Olympics
The Baltimore County Sailing Center hosted its Junior Olympics last weekend—which included a special dinner guest: Tucker Thompson of the America’s Cup. We hope to have a post-event report and some photos soon, but in the meantime, here’s a photo of Tred Avon YC juniors at the event and a link to 2018 JO results.
