One of the year's best races and parties happens this weekend. The Leukemia Cup Regatta kicks off this evening with its elaborate Gala, and because the weather is so lovely tonight, more tickets have been made available.
It's a change to hang out with the Chesapeake's maritime elite for a great cause. There's no denying that cancer research is off the charts right now, which is exceptionally important since someone is diagnosed with leukemia every four minutes.
So wait - let that sink in for two seconds. Every four minutes. That's about as much time as it takes you to pump your gas, or toast your bagel. We try not to get too passionate on this blog, but holy hades that's crazy. So the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society takes the money they raise and do a few things with it: They fund leading-edge cancer research; they provide information and support services for patients; they educate health care professionals; and they advocate for patients at national and state levels. And their efforts are really working: 50 years ago, kids diagnosed with leukemia had only a 3% change of survival. Today, they have a 90% chance of survival. You have to respect that.
The LLS party is a great way to help forward this cause. You get out there, you have fun, and your money goes to making a huge, huge difference.
We'll see you there.
