With only one American stopover, it's easy to forget that the Volvo Ocean Race kicks off in early October. We're excited because Teams SCA and Alvimedica have multiple American sailors onboard, and they are looking pretty competitive. American sailors are:
Sally Barkow - Team SCA (ODU)
Sara Hastleiter - Team SCA (not a college sailor)
Charlie Enright - Team Alvimedica (Brown)
Mark Towill - Team Alvimedica (Brown)
Nick Dana - Team Alvimedica (College of Charleston)
Matt Noble - Team Alvimedica
CNN is actually covering the VOR with their Mainsail production, which you can apparently watch at certain times (listed in GMT, of course), but they have great videos introducing the teams and showing great sailing footage. We can't deny it. We're getting pumped for October. Might necessitate a Newport trip in early May...which is convenient because the boats are scheduled to arrive starting on May 5, the last day of the Annapolis NOOD.
