After a group of beach-goers discovered some unusual pieces of debris washed up on Maryland's Assateague shoreline on the morning of June 25th, National Park officials called in the Ocean City bomb Squad who then called for the beach to be evacuated and closed, the Baltimore Sun has reported.  Following the identification of the World War II aged bombs, it was decided that in order to be disposed of, they must be detonated. Once the park was closed, two detonations occurred from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the park was reopened at 1:30 p.m.

The rangers and officials of Assateague are no strangers to these types of devices because this national park was once used as a WWII testing ground.  Because of the park's history as a testing ground, officials say that this bomb, like many of the others that have been found, was an American device that was brought to Assateague for a trial run during World War II.
