This turned out to be a tougher than expected evening kayak run. I paddled south with the breeze at an estimated 12 knots and white caps forming, I made it to the steps at the south end of Willows and I got even with the first bulkhead at the south end and then made the turn for home. This was a tough, arm and shoulder workout!

I paddled south into the breeze and chop. I made it to tge Breezy Point line before turning and heading home.
Just an easy kayak run north to the dead trees at the cliffs and back.
Last year, we finished 2nd in 17 hours,11 minutes, 11 seconds. This year, it took us a little longer ... more like 20 hours, 15 minutes, but WE WON!!! With a crew of 6, we raced hard all night. This was the first time my son, Dave had done the race with me. He had done it before without me. I did it last year with out him on board. This year we made a great memory together, one we will always remember!
We went out on the DePalm catamaran for some great snorkeling. We went to the Antilla ship wreck, Malmok Beach, and Catalina Cove. We had great snorkeling and a great time!
I rented a kayak for 5 hours / days from Andrew, the activities man on the beach, and I took full advantage of it! On 5 different occasions I took the kayak out in strong winds. I would paddle to the Ritz, to Armando's Kite Shack, and to the Hadicarri dock. Each day, I was out about 45 minutes. I have now kayaked in the Caribbean Sea!
It was strictly a fun race.... out and back. The first boat to the windward mark radios back that they have made the turn. The rest of the fleet then makes a "dash" for the finish line. In very light air, we still finished third.
We were able to start the race, and attempt to make the first mark, but that's as far as we got before RC abandoned the race. We got to the party at Zahnhiser's just before the skies opened. We finished 3rd overall for this year's Screwpile Challenge. Well done Team Barba Roja!
Screwpile Challenge Day 2…. Well, we did it again, almost! We lost to Bad Cat (the J111) and Pursuit (a custom-built 40 footer).
But we beat everyone else in the fleet, including a lot of really good boats from out of town. Now, we have to go do it again tomorrow. A first-place finish tomorrow would give us First Overall for the weekend.
Yes, that’s me wearing the well-traveled Tilley canvas hat in the picture. #sailingteambarbaroja. #poppabobscanvas
Screwpile Lightouse Challenge Day1… a HUGE success! Sailing Team Barba Roja raced their hearts out yesterday over a 13.2 mile course in the Chesapeake. We missed first place by only 1 1/2 minutes (to Bad Cat, a very fast J111). But we beat every other boat in out fleet.
Congratulations
Team Barba Roja and a well-earned 2nd Place finish on Day 1!
