#26 - If you were going across the bridge in Solomons today and saw a sailboat, there is a good chance that it was us. It felt more like early November than late April, but the sun was out, the wind was favorable and Paula and I had a great afternoon on the Patuxent! Even with the water tanks filled for cruising, our 40-year old Cape Dory hit a top speed of 6.9 knots with just the main and the yankee up. It was great sailing indeed!

We took advantage of the weather and our scheduled time on the boat to take a shake-down cruise. On Tuesday, we hit 7 knots under just the jib! We sailed up the river, before tacking once more and headed into one of our favorite anchorages... Folks Cove 2. On Thursday morning we took it easy while on the hook to do some maintenance. After lunch, we pulled the hook and sailed out of Mill Creek under main only, hitting 5+ knots. We popped the yankee, and tacked multiple times before running out of wind just off St. Leonard Creek. Pulled in to the slip at 4:00.
Helped Captain Dave Ohler deliver a Beneteau from Jabin's to Chesapeake Harbor. It was a tight spot but Dave did a great job of backing her into her slip!
Wednesday night racing. The RC had a good chance to shorten the course but didn't do it, and instead we sailed into the dark, in calm breezes, before the wind came back up and we sailed home under spinnaker.
Aloha Spirit Launch Day! She's wearing new colors... green bottom and boot stripe.
“Next to Christmas, it’s the happiest day of the year!” Bob Ohler
There is still a list of tasks to do before we sail, but Aloha Spirit got launched yesterday! We changed the bottom paint color to green this year, and the new green canvas will really set her off. With a full schedule of cruising on the calendar, we’re excited!
Two good races... one in big wind and waves in the Bay and the second one was essentially a race back to Solomons. We won the first, and finished second in tge second race. With DJO on board!
Mother Nature and the Chesapeake Bay teamed up to provide good, challenging conditions yesterday for the first distance race of the year. We were seeing 31+ knots of wind with gusts as high as 49! We had big wind and waves in the middle of the Bay! I’ll admit that it wasn’t for everyone, but for the few boats that showed up, there was a sense of accomplishment. We did not break or lose anything. Another, much larger boat tore their main sail lost the battens in their jib.
Sent Steve up the mast to get the jammed halyard. Still, it was a good night to be on the water. We took second to Elan.
New, green bottom paint and boot stripe along with polishing and servicing all 7 seacocks while on the hard in Solomons.
