Today was a great sailing day with a southerly building to 20 knots. Originally a full jib was triple reefed at the end. The engine was cut for at least half the trip. The threatening weather held off until the evening. When I topped off the fuel at Town Creek Marina, she only took four gallons for 18 engine hours. I was surprised at first but then realized that most of our power was coming from the sails.

My nephew Andrew stopped by mid afternoon and Peter arrived by 5 pm. We had a delightful dinner at the City Kitchen above the marina office. Wicked thunder storms passed over as we planned our cruise agenda.

A sunrise start was necessary to time the first of three bridges that opened either on the hour or half hour. That resulted in a combined delay of about one hour. Mild temperatures and a gentle afternoon breeze from the south resulted in plenty of motor sailing with full main and jib. An enormous wildfire in the Croatian National Forest was visible from a distance and from our anchorage in Swanboro.

Upon entering the harbor and rolling in the main, the spare halyard used to raise Christmas lights rolled up inside the mast along with the topping lift to which this spare halyard was attached. The main was now hopelessly jammed halfway furled. As Debbie followed the ICW in a mostly windward direction, I wrestled with the jam, eventually by pulling on the topping lift, I was able to fully unfurl the main. However, the topping lift was still jammed inside the mast. Fortunately by loosening both the main halyard and topping lift the jam was freed and I was able to fully furl the mainsail. That spare halyard has been retired. I'll use it again but only for Christmas lights. We reentered the harbor two hours later. We decided not to go ashore. Fortunately there was only one other boat anchored. There was a strong current and a dragging anchor would have resulted in being swept into a low clearance bridge. That new anchor investment last year really paid off.

Sunny with a departure temperature of 60 degrees and a high of 80 degrees. Southerly breeze building to 15 knots in the Cape Fear River. The ride to Southport was mostly narrow waterways. After a half hour stop fuel stop in Southport we entered the Cape Fear River and were hammered by a four knot ebb tide slowing our boat over ground speed to 2 knots. With 9 miles to go up the river we set full main and jib, kept our engine speed at a 6 knot cruising speed but with the sail assist managed 7.5 knots through the water. We also dodge the worst of the current by staying out of the channel and in shallow water. We were back on the ICW two hours later. Our day was topped off by dinner ashore at the South Beach Grill in Wrightsville Beach.

Just prior to the approach to Little River, the current was 2.5 knots, the strongest we have encountered so far. On our way to the anchorage behind Bird Island, we opted to go out the Little River Inlet for an hour sail in the ocean. As we turned to parallel the shore, the transition from river water to seawater was abrupt and startling. We ended the afternoon with a dinghy ride to Bird Island and a walk on the beach. Perfect weather today!

Another sunny day with a departure temperature of 50 degrees warming up to 73 degrees in the afternoon. Winds varied in direction and speed from 0 - 10 knots. With only 36 six miles to go, I chose to average 5 knots under sail and power. That meant numerous sail deployments and throttle adjustments. It was fun! When we got to the Waccamaw River, it was a 2 knot current against us so I up the boat speed to 6 knots resulting in a total travel time of 8 hours. Our destination was scenic and secluded. The Navionics anchorage guide said beware of alligators so we opted not to take a dinghy ride.

We are back on the road. Louise was discharged from the hospital on Sunday and we had dinner out. She insisted that we continue on our cruise as originally planned and convinced us she was well enough for us to proceed. However prior to the knowledge of this fortunate outcome, I could not be sure how long we would remain in Charleston so Keith Kersey took the opportunity to return to Annapolis with Kris.

Keith Kersey did help out with some routine maintenance such as an engine oil and filter change.  The transmission oil change was due as well. I discovered that the transmission oil level was woefully low due to a slow leak, another disaster diverted.

After fuel and pump out we departed around 9:30 am for an eight hour trip to South Santeria River.  The weather was great and the wind direction and wind speed were perfect for motor sailing with a fully deployed jib.  The tide was very low so we did ground a couple of times.

Today is our final day before our arrival in Charleston to see my cousin Louise. With only 26 nm remaining we had bacon, eggs, muffin and fruit for breakfast prior to our 9:00 am departure. It was a pleasant five hour journey with the last hour under full sail into the Charleston harbor. We did hold briefly for a barge coming through in the opposite direction at the swing bridge. We also witnessed a boat with a 65 foot mast squeeze under a bridge with a 65 foot clearance. Finally, we did a full stop grounding because one of the boats coming in the opposite direction didn't give sufficient room. Shortly after our arrival, Kris and Debbie went shopping and I met Louise on the dock. Unfortunately, upon boarding Mystic, Louise grabbed the wheel for support. The wheel spun and Louise fell breaking two ribs. Meanwhile, Bill Barton and his friend Marcia show up during this calamity. I spent the remainder of the day with Louise in the Hospital. Meanwhile, Keith Kersey arrived to join us during the next week of our journey. I'm pleased to say that Louise is on the mend and I'll update tomorrow.

We had mostly favorable current due to flooding on the Waccamaw River. On the lower stretches, we managed to set full main and jib and cut the engine. After returning to the confines of the ICW we set full jib only and continued our journey under reduced engine throttle. Our first anchorage attempt on the Awendaw Creek was far to exposed to the Easterly winds so we continued another 4 miles to Graham Creek. Our favorable conditions had us averaging over 6 knots for the duration. Another evening of grilling although this time we ate down below due to rain.

Our 7 am departure has become a ritual, allowing plenty of daylight at our destination even for the longest distances. Sunrise temperature of 50 degrees climbed to 75 degrees by mid afternoon. Plenty of sunshine and gentle breeze. This was our first day of motor only since the Dismal Swsmp. The four swing bridges opened upon demand with minimal delay. Our ten hour trip passed quickly because of the variety of scenery. Sand dunes and swampland. Houses on high ground, houses on stilts. Our destination was scenic and peaceful. This was our first evening with dinner in the cockpit since the Dismal Swamp but without the bugs. The grilled steak hit the spot.

Today was sunny with 43 degrees at our 7 am departure and a high of 68 degrees. A pleasant breeze from the NE allowed some motor sailing but less than the previous day. Debbie provided blueberry pancakes for breakfast while underway. The two low bridgrs opened on the hour but we timed them perfectly. We covered our 40 nm trip in 7 hours resulting in an early afternoon arrival in Southport Basin. Fortunately, we were the only boat anchored in this quaint little harbor. As we settled in we discovered that we would be aground at low tide, and that would delay our morning departure. We weighed anchor and found an extra two feet of depth closer to the docks that lined one shore. We met Roger and Michelle for delightful drinks and dinner at the Edgewater 122 restaurant. The evening was topped off by a stroll along the water's edge.
