At last, the nasty weather is over. After a bacon and eggs breakfast aboard Mystic, we departed Beaufort just before 9 am for a 57 nm journey to our next destination. Sunny with a morning temperature of 45 degrees and a high of 60 degrees. Winds were typically 15 knots from the northeast. That's back to shorts weather for me.

No more wide open bays and rivers separated by canals. This is the true ICW with a well marked channel. After crossing the Newport River in Beaufort, we crossed two minor rivers associated with the White Oak River Inlet and the New River Inlet. Although the path of the ICW turned slightly inward, we could still see the surf of the inlets over low points in the dunes. These are not considered ICW accessible inlets. However, the current in the ICW was influenced by these inlets. Depending on the tide state, the maximum current occurred as you approached and left the inlets but in opposite directions. The least current was experienced mid-way between the inlets. We had five or six changes in current during our journey. Up to 1.5 knots of current in each case.

There was lots of pretty scenery and wildlife along the way, Pelicans, dolphins, sand dunes and waterfront homes. We motored sailed the whole way with reefed jib. A full jib would have blocked forward visibility. Maybe with tomorrow's lesser wind we'll set the mainsail. We did have a 25 minute delay at a swing bridge. Arrival time was 6 pm. Our anchorage in Topsail was scenic and sheltered with minimal current.

We spent the day at Town Creek Marina due to strong winds. We planned our anchorages between here and Charleston. Despite losing a day, the distances between stops look feasible for an arrival in Charleston on Friday.

Today we expected an eight hour trip to Beaufort, NC, but it took just over six and a half hours due to a favorable 1.5 knot current in one of the canals plus a strong NE wind that had us surfing down the waves in the Neuse River. One wave had us peak at 11 knots. We used motor plus a significantly reefed jib to balance us for the ride up the river. The most challenging part of the journey was pulling into the slip in gale force winds. Again no working wind instruments but I could not resist looking up the archived wind data  We had an average wind speed of 40 mph with gusts of 50 mph.

Kris met us at the marina and we all went to dinner at Blackbeard's Bar and Grill, a great ending to an enjoyable and memorable week.

Today was exhilarating. The bridge tender was hesitant to open the bridge across the Alligator River due to high winds. They won't open it above 34 knots of wind speed. We then had a fast broad reach up the Alligator River under a single reefed jib. The 20 mile canal transit to the Pongo River was uneventful. We motor sailed down the Pongo River and across the Pamlico River. Our jib was double than triple reefed, as we rode the waves into our final destination in Eastman Creek. This was a well protected anchorage.  We traveled 69 nm in eleven hours  The decision to go the extra distance was based on tomorrow's forecast of a colder, rainy day. It was windy but I don't have actual wind readings since the wind instruments stopped working three days ago. Everyone had a chance to sail.

We departed shortly after 7am for the 8:30 South Mill lock opening. From there we traveled a meandering route to Elizabeth City. A Beneteau 343 passed us going North, the only such sighting of the day. The bridge master in Elizabeth City seemed surprised we were just passing through. We sailed most of the way to our destination. With strong SW winds we reefed the main and jib and anticipated some chop in the Albemarle Sound. That never materialized and we took out the reef as we crossed the Sound. Our final destination was South Lake, about three miles off the ICW. We anchored in 7 feet of water. It was a comfortable journey.

Today was quite the journey. We departed at 8:30 am with plenty of time to spare for the 1:30 pm lock opening at the the start of the Dusmal Swamp Canal. Along the way we passed many Navy and commercial shipping facilities. Prior to the Dismal Swamp route, the Gilmerton lift bridge was opened for us. We had lunch while waiting for the lock to open. Instead of anchoring we nudged against the shore. Needlesss to say the tide was dropping so we when we backed off, it took full reverse to get us free.

The Dismal Swamp journey is very scenic and challenging with numerous trees that overhang the canal, many fallen trees that blocked most of the passageway and the occasional USO (unidentified submerged object) that we bounced over.

It was sunny, with a high in the mid 80s, a nice breeze on the nose that would have had me set sail if we'd been heading north.  Very pleasant, although I can imagine during the dog gone days of summer, it would be dismal.

At the welcome center we met friendly people that were heading north, on a power boat and a trawler. We encountered no traffic on the canal route. Dinner was on board in the cockpit until the biting critters drove us down below. The air conditioning was welcome.

8 am departure, 7 hour trip to Hampton, VA. My first day in shorts. Sunny in the afternoon with a high in the 70s.  We motored until about 12:30 then sailed the last 2 hours in 6-8 knots of breeze from the SSE. We had dinner in the Surf Rider restaurant at Safe Harbor Bluewater marina. Steve and Will from NASA Langley joined us. After dinner we plan our Dismal Swamp passage.

We weighed anchor before sunrise. We knew we had a ten hour journey hence the early start. The morning was sunny but chilly, around 43 degrees. Winds were typically 15-20 knots from the south and on the nose so we motored all but the last hour. Lots of short steep waves and pounding. We had dinner at Sue and Dutch's house in Deltaville. I forgot to add, Clarke joined us for a beverage the previous evening

Anchored in Jackson Creek, Deltaville, VA

Our decision to delay departure was a good one. Very strong wind overnight. The water was blown out of the Bay. We departed an hour earlier to avoid being stuck at the dock. An inch lower and we'd still be there. Sunny, high 54, winds 15-25 knots from the NNW. Gusts to 30. Very exciting sail down the Bay with good surfing waves. Peak boat speed of 10.5 knots. We overtook a barge and tugboat heading our direction. Double reef in main and jib.

We anchored in Back Creek, just past Solomon's Island.

Lynn, Dave, Debbie and I took a quick whaler ride on Impulse to Meredith Creek. Our departure on Mystic was postponed a day due a forecast of wind gusting to 50 knots.
